Nana Mouskou

There were straight walls and there were walls that gave the impression of being straight, Nana Mouskou thought, taking a step back from the wall, squinting her eyes slightly as she tried to decide whether it was the wall or her hanging that gave the impression of irregularity. After a few minutes she sighed, carefully taking her paintings down again to lean them against the back of the sofa while she rearranged the nails on the wall, again.
There were something with the walls in the old house, she knew it was, but no matter how she meassured and how she turned her paintings she couldn’t quite figure it out. It was very frustrating and after the fifth try she decided to let it be, throwing the hammer onto the sofa, following it with a heavy sigh.
A year ago she had owned the perfect wall, Nana thought, switching on the TV and turning it off again, staring at the provoking wall, unable to help herself. It had been the same colour as cinderblocks, and as straight and square as any wall had ever been. She had been a success, and there had been writings about her and her art, and then she had walked into that same wall, and that had been it. Her life had crumpled as she tried to hold on to it and the crumbs and blown from her tight grasp and…She had escaped, she guessed it was what she had really done though she had not thought of it like that a month ago. Then it had seemed a sensible thing to do, leaving everything behind her as she graduated. A new life, it had been the idea but sometimes, as when the walls were being mean to her, she wondered if a new life was really all it was made out to be.
