The Incipide Family

Roger loved the sound of spoons clattering against plates, and the quiet hiss as the water slowly started to boil for his morning coffee and of course the twittering of the birds in the trees outside, waiting for him to put out a plate of stale bread for them as he did every morning. For him the slow mornings were the best part of the day, where he could sit down with his newspaper, listening to his wife Huguette hum to the radio that were broadcasting music from their youth from its corner as she did the morning chores. The TV stood next to the radio, as cold and unused as the day Hébert had carried it into the kitchen, as proud as he had ever been, his smile almost splitting his face in two.
Roger still couldn’t understand what was the matter with his youngest son, and lately it had only grown worse. Personally he blamed the school, where ideas like modernity spread faster than a cold in Mars. And internet. He should have put down his foot hard and firm when Hébert dragged that damn computer into his room, but as usually his lovely wife had been of the opinion that it was better to let Hébert be. He was young, and somewhat foolish like they all had been once. And now he was almost never at home, hanging around with the Cashman brothers that destroyed him totally.
Why couldn’t Hébert be interested in a nice girl instead, Roger could have understood him staying up late for the chance to catch a brief glimpse of that special someone bathing in the river but grades dropping due to lack of sleep because he had been chatting away the night on the computer?
At least his legacy rested safely with his eldest son Raynald whom would sit opposite him at the kitchen table, sipping his coffee while reading the sports pages, waiting for his father to be finished with the news and the comic strips not unlike a trusting dog. A dog that had its secret flaws such as a liking for a certain young lady who was almost as filled with strange ideas as Hébert, Nana Mouskou with her silk hair and soft curves whose smile could melt glaciers.
